From The Local: Sweden’s News in English

Swedish health authorities have ruled that gender-based abortion is not illegal according to current law and can not therefore be stopped, according to a report by Sveriges Television.

The Local reported in February that a woman from Eskilstuna in southern Sweden had twice had abortions after finding out the gender of the child.

The woman, who already had two daughters, requested an amniocentesis in order to allay concerns about possible chromosome abnormalities. At the same time, she also asked to know the foetus’s gender.

Wow! But, given the logic of the arguments for abortion, why not?

Exactly, Matt. I’ve never really understood the arguments against gender selective abortion—or any casual abortion—once the absolute right to abortion by the mother has been stipulated.

In Sunday’s Washington TImes there was a fascinating and thoughtful article about mothers who choose not to abort in the face of congenital defects, including inevitably fatal genetic and developmental flaws.

My wife and I have been through this. Our third child tested low on the AFP test, indicating a possibility of Downs. We were at risk anyway due to our ages. We decided to forgo amnio, because it does have a significant risk of miscarriage and because the AFP test is fairly inaccurate as an indicator. We fortunately were not pressured by our obstetricians, but nonetheless the remaining months were spent an anxiety and prayer. Our son seemed perfectly normal, until some months later when he failed to grow at a proper rate, and the blood test was run.
