I have dithered, over the last week or so, over what would be a good fast to keep through Lent. I am not physically able to make a complete fast at any time, so I need something that will be a daily reminder of Lent, rather than, say, making a complete fast one day a week.

I only drink coffee about four times a year anyway, so that would be cheating. Desserts and sweets would seem “good for me”, but as I have just written in my Lent book for 2010, a fast for self-improvement reasons is also missing the point.

A traditional fast would include everyday staples such as meat or fish, which would make more sense to me. If I were to do this, though, my fast would become a dire inconvenience to other people.

On the basis that the fast should be a daily reminder to me, and not a pain in the neck to all those around me, I have decided that both desserts and alcohol will be it for this year, and I shall break the fast on just a few selected feast days, including St Megingaud’s day.
