I had a gentleman in my former congregation who wanted to have his wife’s ashes removed from the columbarium as he could not bear the thought of her being in an Episcopal church! He himself died very soon and is interred next to her in the same Episcopal church now.
That sort of spiritual domination/bullying is what cheeses me off as a libertarian about the Episco-left. A.N. Wilson, not a conservative, nailed it recently: their making a show of sitting lightly on doctrine sounds benign but it really means they want to rule all: scripture, other tradition, you and me. In other words they’re not content to be free to meet, govern themselves and congratulate themselves on being smarter, more charitable and more open-minded than you and me. All rights I defend even if I don’t like them. Like that poor man’s and his wife’s ashes they want to own you. How many here think if the liberal mainline took over society that Catholics and conservative Protestants would keep their right not to marry gays? Show of hands. Anyone?
